Canon printers use a non-replaceable sponge pad at the bottom of the device to absorb ink during print head cleaning cycles. Over time, this sponge saturates. To prevent ink from leaking out of the printer case, Canon programs a counter into the EEPROM. Once that counter hits a specific number (usually around 7,000 to 15,000 pages), the printer hard-locks itself.
