(locally known as Хандгай ) is officially considered the largest living wild animal in Mongolia. Weighing between 380–700 kg, it is a rare and protected species primarily found in the forested regions of the north.

In the northernmost taiga forests of Khövsgöl and Selenge provinces, the ( Alces alces ) appears. A male moose can weigh up to 700 kg (1,540 lbs) and stand 2.3 meters at the shoulder. However, moose are extremely rare in Mongolia (only a few hundred individuals), and their range is marginal.
