At nearly 2 hours and 49 minutes, the movie is long. Some scenes in the second half, particularly the comedy bits with the "band of brothers," drag a little.

The story begins in the 1970s, introducing Om Prakash Makhija (Shah Rukh Khan), a junior artiste with dreams of becoming a superstar. He is in love with the superstar actress of the era, Shanti Priya (Deepika Padukone). Om’s life takes a tragic turn when he discovers that Shanti is secretly married to the scheming producer Mukesh Mehra (Arjun Rampal). When Mukesh sets fire to a film set to kill Shanti and hide their marriage, Om attempts to save her but is thrown out of the set by Mukesh’s guards.
