The film begins with a global crisis: an alien object enters Earth’s atmosphere and lands in Central Park, New York City. The object contains Klaatu (Keanu Reeves), a humanoid alien, and a giant spherical robot named GORT. Klaatu is shot by a panicked soldier, leading to GORT’s aggressive defense. Klaatu is taken to a military hospital, where he meets Dr. Helen Benson (Jennifer Connelly), a astrobiologist. After escaping custody, Klaatu reveals his mission: Earth has been judged by an interstellar council.
