Bandung, 1997. Rainy season. The smell of clove cigarettes and wet pavement clung to the air outside SMA Negeri 3. Inside, Maya sat by the window, tracing the outline of a name on her notebook: Dilan . She’d never said it aloud. Everyone knew Dilan belonged to the boys' gang, to the alleys of Cihampelas, to the roar of his modified Yamaha RX-King.

: The narrative places Dilan at the center of the shifting political climate as Indonesia moves toward the fall of the New Order regime.

Pidi Baiq’s story is set in Bandung in the early 90s, specifically focusing on SMAN 2 Bandung (High School) and later Institut Teknologi Bandung (ITB) for college. The original trilogy ( Dilan 1990 , Dilan 1991 , and Milea ) ends around 1991.
